PHILOSOPHY

Horsemanship – isn´t that the short moment when rider and horse fuse into one piece of art? Or is it rather human insolence to mount a creature that was not made for this – finding great pleasure in riding it in circles? Why do we do that? I am afraid, we won´t be able to find a satisfactory reply. I frequently asked this question at clinics. The answers of the participants ranged from “Because it´s fun…” to “Well, without the equestrian sport horses would live in zoos or reservations.”
RIGHT, but both answers are neither true nor false. After all we are not able to ask horses about their opinion, whether they want to come up to our expectations or if they preferred not to live at all. Not so long ago a life without horses was unimaginable anyway.

“Wherever we find human traces those of horses are right beside them!”

Horses were abused for wars, during the Migration period we expected them to endure the hardship of carrying heavy stocks, some were bridled with torturous bits, they were enslaved and exploited, BUT: we needed them. Now in the 21st century we torment horses for the fun of it. Sometimes I wonder which option is preferable.

And this is the only reason left to work with horses: As a human being I have the feeling I owe them a lot after all they have gone through all these millenia.

“Horses have taught me a lot, the most important being patience, modesty, respect, and unconditional compassion. So I will continue to speak out and to be an advocate for the horse. I regard them as partners and I call for the respect they deserve.”

What is classical dressage?

I find the answer in Michelangelo´s reply to his students who wondered how he creates such extraordinary sculptures:

“In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”

It has never been my intention to achieve a goal by means of force and violence.
Humans have the advantage of deliberating and acting accordingly. We are physically inferior, therefore resorting to force and violence is a very stupid thing to do. We should rather use our brains. By means of the proper sequence of lessons we can bring them to do what we want – but everything without applying force! The result is real horsemanship. From first contact with your horse in the stable - start off with this attitude! Some riders use harsh bits, they pull the reins and their leg aids resemble sledge hammers. Note: A horse feels a tiny fly anywhere on the body and chases it off. Why does a rider apply brute force?

Horsemanship is not about dominating a horse, but about controlling yourself.

This kind of riding stands out due to the harmony between horse and rider. The rider is close to the horse as he is to no other animal. He strives for perfect harmony and gets an idea of unity. Maybe the legend of centaurs arose from these feelings….
