Hippolytos is an educational system based on classical and baroque riding and on ideas of the Classical Antiquity. Alfons Dietz represents and rides according to the system of classical dressage and named it Hippolytos. Hippolytos is an Ancient Greek word and means “the one who eases and relaxes horses” – in contrast to Hippocrates – “the one who tames and controls horses” We intend to establish a forum for those interested in classical dressage, who aim to have a horse that is easy to ride in all lessons, relaxed and submissive, responsive and supple. Then the horse is a partner and not a piece of equipment. Xenophon, the “master of horses” who lived in ancient Greece, wrote the first extant riding theory “Hippopeideia”. In his lifetime young riders were educated by handling horses. So they learned to be modest, patient and empathetic, highly valued virtues for riders. The educational system Hippolytos should enable all hippologists, also young riders, to achieve a correct and fair handling of horses, good schooling and a pliable seat, but also all the virtues associated with classical dressage and horsemanship in general. The examinations within the framework of this educational system serve as reassurances for the rider to have achieved a high degree of harmony, suppleness, and relaxedness on a certain level (also the main focus in competitions). Not the lessons are essential in these exams, but the degree of the horse´s suppleness and contentedness. This will also be the focus in competitions which we are going to organize within the scope of the educational system of Hippolytos. A
certain sequence of clinics about the central topics of classical
dressage are considered a preparation for exams. These topics are
classical dressage, relaxed and non-violent solutions for problems
coming up during schooling horses, furthermore the full range of work in
hand applied in practice. There are three consecutive exams and after successfully taking these exams you are entitled to call yourself ٭ Agògein (the one who leads and educates) ٭ Lütès (the one who eases tensions and gains suppleness) ٭ Hippùrgos (the one who has achieved harmony and exerts influence on his surroundings) The terms in ancient Greek were deliberately chosen as they are meaningful and expressive and should epitomize the rider´s level of education. After
passing the examinations the candidate will not only be handed over a
diploma, but also an object to symbolize the level of education. The Six Pillars of Hippolytos
